After five days of competition at the ‘Commonwealth Senior, Junior, Youth and Under 23 Championships’ in Delhi, ‘Team Weightlifting’s’ medal winners are back in the country yesterday with Gold, Silver & Bronze medal.
After five days of competition at the ‘Commonwealth Senior, Junior, Youth and Under 23 Championships’ in Delhi, ‘Team Weightlifting’s’ medal winners are back in the country yesterday.
Team Weightlifting' Coach, Wendy Hale Bosa a former lifter and Olympian thanked the ‘Lord’ for giving the athletes strength and everyone rendered support in making the trip a successful one.
Coach Bosa said it was a great trip, especially for the two youth and junior weightlifting stars Lorah Maelosia and Shirmara Wini as it was a big experience for them competing first time in a Commonwealth competition. They have done extremely well.
“I want to thank the Lord for giving us strength, secondly, I want to thank SINIS, the National Hosting Authority [NHA], National Sports Council [NSC], National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) and the Solomon Islands Weightlifting Federation [SIWF] and its President Naoyuki Fujiyama, for their hard work making our trip possible,” said Hale.
“Also, I want to say thank you to the parents of the athletes, for having the trust in us to travel with their children. Not forgetting all of our weightlifting supporters every time cheering the team during competitions, I would like to give a big ‘thank you’ to all weightlifting fans.
“This was a great trip, especially the two girls who are in their youth and junior categories, it was a big experience for them as it was a first time for them competing in a ‘Commonwealth’ competition and they have done very well.”
Coach Hale said there are areas yet to work on that needs improvement before the Pacific Games comes november.
IOC Scholarship recipient and Gold medal winner in the Women’s 55kg at the Commonwealth Senior in New Delhi, Iron Lady Jenly Tegu Wini expressed her happiness at the teams achievement especially the two young female weightlifters
“Our hard work has paid off in what we have achieved. Although I achieved Gold, it does not mean I am satisfied, as I must continue to work hard for the upcoming competition as well [XVII Pacific Games],” said a determined Wini.
“I want to say thank you to SINIS and its Staff for helping us athletes through trainings to produce good performances, and also NHA, NOCSI and the country’s weightlifting federation.”
Silver medalist in the 55kg Youth category Division, Lorah Maelosia shared that from her experience, has boosted excitement as she looks forward to continue with her training heading towards the Pacific Games.
‘Bronze medal’ winner in the 59kg Junior category, Shirmara Wini also shared the same sentiments. The Championship was very different from past trips because the pressure was high, having competing against other world athletes made it extremely competitive.
“It was a tough experience. But at least we achieved something out from the competition,” said Wini. Now the focus is on the Pacific Games in november.
Weightlifting icon Jenly Wini bagged Gold medal in the ‘Women’s 55kg’ with an effort of 189kg (83kg + 106kg), while uprising weightlifting stars Lorah Maelosia bagged Silver medal in the 55kg Youth category Division and Shirmara Wini ‘Bronze medal’ in the 59kg Junior category.
Solomon Islands Junior and Youth weightlifters will be now preparing for a training camp coming up soon in Samoa, during September.
This will be a good experience for the country’s young weightlifting athletes to continue exposing in their build-up towards the nearing XVII Pacific Games this year at home.
